Portulaca Oleracea Extract – Protective Umbrella for Sensitive Skin

Portulaca oleracea, or purslane, is specially for sensitive skin.

Portulaca oleracea L. is an annual succulent herb, a common wild vegetable in the field and on the roadsider. In traditional Chinese medicine, portulaca oleracea is used for skin wounds of insects or snake bites, as well as mosquito bites.

The whole herb of portulaca oleracea is used in cosmetic. Portulaca oleracea extract contains active ingredients such as flavonoids and alkaloids. The research shows that the total flavonoids of portulaca oleracea account for 7.67% of the total weight of the whole herb. I test the anti-allergic effect of portulaca oleracea extract. First applied histamine to both two arms, after 3-5 minutes erythema and itching appeared. Then applied 0.5% of portulaca oleracea extract water solution on the right arm, applied only water on the left arm. Erythema and itching on the right arm was improved, and the situation was much better than the left arm.

Portulaca oleracea extract has a significant inhibitory effect on hyaluronidase, thereby inhibiting allergic reactions.

Portulaca oleracea extract inhibits apoptosis of keratinocytes and fibroblasts, reverses differentiation of keratinocyte. It also protects skin cells from UV-induced damage; as well as soothes and repairs skin as the role of skin barrier. Portulaca oleracea extract reduces the expression of human intermediate filaggrin (FLG) gene, lowers the level of protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR-2), decreases the topical transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and restores the skin barrier function. Thus portulaca oleracea extract plays an significant role in the treatment of acute eczema.

Portulaca Oleracea Extract Other Effects

A Korean study showed that portulaca oleracea extract has effects of skin whitening, anti-wrinkle, and anti-aging.

Portulaca oleracea extract inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, prevents the synthesis of melanin, then it exerts the skin whitening effect.

In addition, portulaca oleracea extract has strong antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity; it can promote the synthesis of collagen and effectively reduce fine lines.
