1. Arbutin Uses Dosage in Skin Whitening Cosmetic
According to the Scientific Committee On Consumer Safety (SCCS):
It is safe to add alpha-arbutin in facial care products no more than 2.0%, and no more than 0.5% in body milk products.
Beta-arbutin is safe to not exceed 7% in face creams, based on the fact that the content of hydroquinone released in cosmetics is less than 1 ppm. It is generally photosensitized when its concentration exceeds 7.0%, and 7.0% concentration is forbidden in skin care products.

2. Arbutin Transdermal Penetration in Cosmetic Formulation

Among alcohols, propanediol has the best effect on promoting transdermal penetration of a-arbutin. Propanediol is a skin penetration enhancer widely used in cosmetics. It has obvious penetration promoting effect on arbutin and can be used as an accelerator for arbutin whitening products.

4% Azone has the most obvious effect on the penetration of arbutin, and it is a very effective arbutin penetration enhancer. Azone is also the most widely used skin penetration enhancer in cosmetics.

The above figure shows that 2% propanediol has the most obvious effect on arbutin permeation promotion. As the concentration of propanediol increases, the enhancing rate gradually decreases, and the lag time is also increasing.

The dual accelerator combination of 4% azone + 2% propanediol has the most obvious effect on penetration of arbutin.

The experimental results of dual accelerators on the penetration of arbutin show that the combination of dual accelerators (4% azone + 2% propanediol) has the best penetration promotion effect, and it can be seen that the ratio of binary accelerators containing nitrogen ketones is better. The effect of the binary accelerator without azone is relatively good.

The combination of ternary accelerators 4% azone + 2% propanediol + 4% glycerin has the most obvious effect on the penetration of arbutin.
In conclusion, it can be seen that the ternary accelerator has a better effect than the binary or single enhancers. Because of the synergy between the enhancers, the transdermal penetration of arbutin is superimposed.
3. Arbutin Uses Tips in Cosmetic Formulation
Alpha-arbutin suggested concentration: 0.2-2.0%.
pH value of alpha-arbutin property: 5.0 -7.0.
Recommended to use pH value: 3.5 – 6.5.
Beta-arbutin suggested concentration: 0.5-7.0%.
pH value of beta-arbutin property: 5.0-7.0.
Recommended to use pH value: 4.0 – 6.5.
There are some tips that need to note for arbutin used in cosmetic formulation.
- 5g deionized watercan dissolve 1g arbutin completely at room temperature; heating can promote the dissolution.
- The emulsification of cosmetic formula system is completed, and the temperature is lowered to below 50°C. Arbutin is dissolved witha small amount of water and then added to the system.
- Adding an appropriate amount of antioxidants to cosmetic formula system, keeping it away from light, or applying arbutin in cream formulations, which can prevent discoloration.
- After the emulsification of cosmetic formula system is completed, cool it down to below50°C, and add NaHSO3 and Na2SO3 (0.3-0.4%) dissolved in a small amount of water to help prevent discoloration.
- The penetration enhancer (azone) is added to cosmetic system to promote the absorption of arbutin and prevent arbutin’s precipitation.
4. Compatibility of Arbutin with Other Whitening Agents
When Arbutin uses in skin whitening cosmetics with other ingredients, you should note the followings:
pH value doesn’t conflict.
The whitening effect targets are different.
Synergistic effect, instead of reducing effect.
Arbutin can be mixed with other skin-whitening ingredients, such as nicotinamide,ethyl ascorbic acid, glabridin, potassium azeloyl diglycinate, phenylethyl resorcinol, aminoethyl phosphonic acid.
