5. Licorice Extract Benefits for Skin
- Skin Whitening Benefit
Licorice extract is an excellent melanin inhibitor. There are three main mechanisms of its action. First, with the participation of licorice extract, the activity of tyrosinase is significantly inhibited, thereby blocking the biosynthesis of melanin in the skin. Secondly, licorice extract can act on the two proteins required in the process of melanin formation, then blocking the enzymatic reaction to reduce the melanin synthesis. Thirdly, licorice extract can be used as an endothelin antagonist, and reduce the regulation of endothelin on the proliferation of melanocytes; thus licorice extract inhibits the production of melanin and whitens the skin.
- Antioxidant Benefit
Licorice extract can hinder the oxidation reaction of low-density lipoprotein to a certain extent. Also it can increase the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase and other enzymatic activities with the participation of glucose. Therefore, licorice extract shows great anti-radical and anti-oxidation effects.
- Anti-inflammation Benefit
Licorice extract can combat skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation by inhibiting inflammation. This is proved through experiments. In the experiment, guinea pigs were irradiated with ultraviolet rays to cause hyperpigmentation, followed by smearing with 0.5% licorice extract solution, and found that Licorice extract can indeed reduce skin inflammation caused by UV stimulation.

- 05% licorice extractcan combine with 1.0% Ascorbic Acid 2 Glucoside, 1.0% nicotinamide, 0.3% aloe vera powder. The combination has a high inhibition rate on tyrosinase activity up to 98.97%.
- Licorice extracthas a synergistic effect with resveratrol, and is more effective in the treatment of chloasma.
- As a whitening agent, licorice extract’s recommended dosage in cosmetic formula is from 001% to 0.1%.
