1. Aescin Overview

Aescin, also known as Escin, Horse Chestnut Extract, is a pentacyclic triterpenoid saponin. It is a mixture of several structurally similar isomers; and the components are not easily separated. Aescin is derived from dried seeds of horse chestnut. It is crystalline powder. Aescin is hardly soluble in water, slightly soluble in cold alcohol; and it is soluble in methanol and ethanol. Aescin, as a saponin compound, is a surfactant, as well as of a strong foaming ability. It can be used as a detergent and foaming agent. Additionally, Aescin exerts anti-inflammatory effect.
