1. Oxymatrine Overview
Oxymatrine is the main component of total alkaloids in sophora flavescens (about 70% of total matrine), also known as matrine oxide. It belongs to quinolizidine alkaloids. It is an active ingredient extracted from sophora flavescens (a species of leguminous plant). Oxymatrine has many bioactivities, including anti-tumor, anti-arrhythmia, anti-inflammatory, inhibition of central nervous system and immunity effect. It possesses a special oxygen structure that changes the polarity of molecule. Therefore, it has a more unique mechanism and effect that matrine don’t have. And its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity is higher than that of matrine. It shows a good curative effect on various types of eczema. At present, it is mainly used in the anti-acne and anti-inflammatory products in the cosmetics industry.

Oxymatrine can inhibit the expression of coxsackievirus nucleocapsid protein. It directly exhibits antibacterial activity. On the one hand, its bactericidal activity can inhibit the biosynthesis of bacteria; on the other hand, it can affect the bio-oxidation process of bacteria. It has wide bactericidal spectrum. Experimental studies have shown that Oxymatrine has a significant inhibitory effect on leukotrienes and luciferase (a kind of intracellular inflammatory mediator).
