1. Quercetin Overview
Quercetin, also known as 5-hydroxyflavone, is a kind of polyhydroxy flavonoid. Quercetin is widely found in various vegetables, fruits and botanical drugs in nature. For example, it is abundant in sophorae, onion, honey and wine. And it is easy to extract, separate and detect. Plamed Quercetin is extracted from dried flower bud of Flos Sophorae, and is natural cosmetic ingredient with purity up to 98%. Quercetin is yellow crystalline powder. It is almost insoluble in cold water, slightly soluble in boiling water. Quercetin is soluble in boiling ethanol and sodium hydroxide solution.
In recent years, Quercetin has been increasingly popular in cosmetics industry. Quercetin can absorb ultraviolet rays strongly. It can be used in sunscreen cosmetics. 2. Quercetin Source
Sophora japonica is a plant of genus Sophora in Leguminosae family. It is a kind of perennial deciduous tree. It is a great species for timber-used, medicine, food and appreciation. Sophora japonica’ s flower is called Flos Sophorae; its flower bud is known as Flos Sophora immaturus, and it is ovate or ellipsoidal. Sophora japonica is native to China. There are wild and cultivated Sophora japonica in north and south parts of China. It is particularly common in Loess Plateau and North China Plain. It is mostly found on plain, near villages, mountains and foothills. It is also cultivated in Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Europe. Flos Sophorae is rich in rutin and flavonoids; and it also contains beta sitosterone, tannins, amino acids, proteins, vigabatrin and trace elements. Flos Sophorae immaturus is a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient. It is widely used in medicine and health care products.

- Anti-oxidation
Quercetin is a superoxide anion scavenger. Its mechanism of anti-free radical and inhibiting lipid oxidation is as follows: It binds iron ions to form inactive complexes; and then it prevents iron ions from participating in biochemical reactions that can produce many free radicals. In the meantime, Quercetin can maintain activity of free radical scavenger of the complexes. There are three main ways that Quercetin prevents free radicals formation: (1) It has complexation capability with superoxide anions to reduce production of oxygen free radicals. (2) It binds iron ions to prevent formation of hydroxyl radicals. (3) Quercetin inhibits aldose reductase, and reduces reduced coenzyme Ⅱ (NADPH) consumption. Thereby, Quercetin improves its anti-oxidation property.
- Anti-bacterial and antivirus
Quercetin can inhibit uncoating of lysosome H+-, ATP enzyme and phosphatase A2. It affects phosphorylation of virus transfer genes. Also, Quercetin inhibits viral protease and RNA synthesis. Therefore, Quercetin has anti-bacterial and anti-viral effect.
- Anti inflammation and anti allergic
Quercetin can inhibit cell lipooxidase and epoxidase, which can restrain synthesis of leukotrienc and prostaglandin. Thus, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agent.
- Sun protection
The characteristic peaks of ultraviolet absorption of Quercetin are 350nm and 258nm. Quercetin has strong ultraviolet absorption capacity as well as anti-phototoxic effect. It can alleviate sunburn and discoloration caused by sun exposure. Quercetin can be used as sunscreen in cosmetics.
