1. Salicin Overview
Salicin is an anti-inflammatory agent made from willow bark; it is metabolized into salicylic acid in the human body. It has properties similar to aspirin, and is traditionally used to heal wounds and relieve joint and muscle pain. Topically use of salicin also works because it has an anti-inflammatory effect. Also it is effective to treat acne and other skin irritation. Salicin has good hygroscopicity, so it can be used as a moisturizer. As a skin conditioner, salicin can make other effective ingredients in cosmetics (whitening, moisturizing, anti-acne, anti-aging, etc.) play a practical role.

4. Salicin Benefits
- Anti-Aging
Salicin has an important impact on the regulation of genes in the skin. Meanwhile, it can regulate genes related to the process of skin aging. The genes are named functional ‘youth gene clusters’. Specifically, the process means skin hydration, including genes association with hyaluronic acid (HA). The study results suggested that salicin can improve the production and maintenance of HA in the skin. Additionally, salicin regulates the production of collagen that is a key protein responsible for skin structure. The increase of collagen can keep skin youthful. Therefore, salicin can improve signs of skin-aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, crow feet and others.
- Anti-Inflammation
In the patent titled “Use of salicin as an anti-irritant compound in cosmetics and skin preparations for external use”, salicin is considered as an effective ingredient to prevent the so-called “sting”. Moreover, salicin can treat atopic dermatitis, type I and type IV skin allergies. The use of salicin can increase the threshold of irritation to sensitive skin. Salicin is also believed to eliminate diaper rash, herpetic inflammation, and sunburn.
5. Salicin Application in Cosmetics
- Salicin is generally applied in facial cleanser, cream, essence, lotion, toner, as well as eye cream.
- 10% salicin is recommended 6.0% concentration in cosmetic formula; while 70% salicin at the concentration of 1.0% is perfect.
- Salicincan be used with ginkgo biloba extract, ginseng extract, aloe vera powder for skin care and beauty.

8. Salicin Safety
In the cosmetic database, salicin is considered as Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract. It is considered a low-risk ingredient, and EWG pointed out that the evidence on its organic toxicity is very limited. However, salicin can be converted into salicylic acid which is considered a high-risk component. If only for topical use, there is no need to worry about the same risk.
Both CTFA and CFDA recognize Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract as a cosmetic ingredient. Also, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract’s safety for skin is tested in Safety Standards for Cosmetics (2015 edition).
