Pueraria lobata was first reported as a unique constituent of Pueraria Mirifica by Shibata et al. in 1959. Song et al. have provided a detailed overview of the studies published before 2014 on the chemical constituents of Pueraria Mirifica which are mainly compounds of the flavonoids, triterpenoids, coumarins, and saponins class. Studies have shown that pueraria lobata has the functions of promoting cardiovascular and retinal blood flow, diastolic smooth muscle antispasmodic, anticarcinogenic, inducing hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antioxidant, antipyretic, antialcoholic, improving memory and enhancing immunity. It has been found by Plamed that pueraria lobata extract has a strong inhibitory effect on 5α-reductase.

4. Causes of Dandruff
① Excessive oil secretion
Oil imbalance is closely related to increased dandruff. Excessive scalp oil secretion, resulting in oxidative damage to the scalp, easily triggered seborrheic dermatitis. A large amount of sebaceous gland lipids in the scalp stratum corneum may destroy the organizational structure of the lipid between the surface cells, prompting skin flaking, and facilitating the colonization of Malassezia in the stratum corneum.
② Microecological imbalance
A variety of microorganisms are distributed on the human scalp, mainly composed of staphylococci, propionibacteria and Malassezia. When the scalp micro-ecological imbalance, dandruff scalp Malassezia on the scalp has 10 times as many as the normal scalp. Originally, Malassezia spp. made up only a small portion of the scalp, with the dominant flora being Propionibacterium acnes. The imbalance between the rapid proliferation of Malassezia and the ratio of Propionibacterium acnes is the source of scalp problems.
③ Damaged scalp barrier
Long-term damage to the scalp (e.g., excessive cleaning, ironing, scratching, overpopulation of P. acnes, etc.) stimulates the signaling pathway of inflammation deep in the skin, leading to inflammation of the scalp, a series of barrier dysfunctions that lead to the abnormal differentiation and proliferation of epidermal cells and cause dandruff.
5. PMAnti-dandruff® 9986 Benefits
- Oil control
5α-reductase is a membrane protease dependent on reduced coenzyme II (NADPH), an important androgen metabolizing enzyme in the skin, which can irreversibly convert testosterone (T) to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the most active androgen and can induce the sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum. DHT is the most active androgen, which can induce sebaceous glands to overproduce oil. Reducing the level of DHT by inhibiting 5a-reductase activity can effectively relieve the excessive secretion of sebum by sebaceous glands and control the oil. The 5a-reductase inhibition rate of the test product was used as an indicator to evaluate the oil-control effect of the test product.
Test result: the inhibition of 5α-reductase by 1% concentration of PMAnti-dandruff® 9986 was 86.6%.
- Inhibit malassezia furfur
PMAnti-dandruff® 9986 at 0.15% inhibited malassezia furfur by 99.99%, which is equivalent to the anti-dandruff mainstays selenium sulfide and OCT (Octopirox).
Sample | Test concentration | Inhibition rate to malassezia furfur |
Selenium sulfide | 0.15% | >99.99% |
