The main active ingredients of Centella asiatica extract are asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. Centella asiatica, also called gotu kola, centella, is a perennial creeping herb. Centella asiatica is native to India. It is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is mainly distributed in south of the Yangtze river of China. Centella asiatica prefers to grow on wet river banks, swamps and meadows. It has been used as medicine in China for more than 2,000 years. Many other countries and regions, such as Madagascar, South Africa, India, Southeast Asian countries and South America, also use it as auxiliary medicine and dermatologic medicine. The main active ingredients used in cosmetics are Asiatic acid and madecassic acid, asiaticoside and madecassoside.

The main components of the triterpenoid saponins of centella asiatica extract are asiaticoside and madecassoside. In modern pharmacological studies, asiaticoside has been proven to have various pharmacological activities, such as promoting wound healing, antiulcer, anti venous insufficiency, antidepressant, and restoration of neurological function, etc. Clinical applications have demonstrated its true efficacy. Fibroblasts are one of the main functional cell components of trauma repair, and changes in the number of fibroblasts directly or indirectly affect the quality of the final repair, therefore, the study of the effects of asiaticoside and madecassoside on the proliferation of fibroblasts and the changes in the cell cycle of fibroblasts is of great significance for trauma repair in orthopedics. Qi Luyu investigated the effects of asiaticoside and madecassoside on human embryonic fibroblasts cultured in vitro, and the results were as follows:
The results of this experiment showed that, except for 400μg/mL, the concentrations of 10μg/mL, 50μg/mL, 100μg/mL, and 200μg/mL of asiaticoside and madecassoside had different degrees of proliferation of human embryonic fibroblasts during the culture process. Among them, as the dose increased from 10μg/mL to 200μg/mL, the more obvious the proliferation-promoting effect was.
Centella Asiatica Extract has a certain inhibitory effect on pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aureus and acne bacillus. Asiatic acid can dissolve the bacteria’s outer waxy membranes and is killed by other drugs or body defense tissues. Asiatic acid and asiaticoside are available for external use to promote wound healing, and stimulate the development of granulation tissue. It can promote cutin or epidermal regeneration. It helps to form connective tissue. It is better to use with phospholipids. Centella Asiatica Extract has obvious effect of eliminating facial whelk and acne. Centella Asiatica Extract can reduce the production of pro-inflammatory mediators (IL-1, MMP-1). It improves and repairs the skin’s barrier function. Thereby it can prevent and correct the skin’s immune dysfunction. Therefore, Centella Asiatica Extract, due to its anti-inflammatory activity, can also be used in cosmetics such as after-sun repair and anti-allergic products.
Centella asiatica extract also has a strong antioxidant effect, which can inhibit free radical activity. Oxidation is one of the important causes of skin aging, radiation in the external environment, air pollution, etc. will make the human body produce free radicals. Free radicals are active substances that lack electrons, and when they enter the human body, they can easily seize electrons with cells, leading to cellular aberrations, which is the root cause of human aging and disease. Zainol et al. studied the antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds of roots, leaves and petioles of four Asian centella species, and the results showed that the leaves and roots of Centella asiatica have high antioxidant activity, which is comparable to that of tocopherol.
